Before Gameboys or anything of that nature, there was the tamagotchi. The device was actually quite good for teaching a kid a little something about responsibility if you didn’t have the space or cash for a real pet. When my brother went away on a school trip, he was so worried about losing his little digital dog that he left it with my mum to take care of. When he got home a few days later, he discovered that she’d accidentally left it in a pair of jeans in the airing cupboard. The virtual pub had gone to pixel heaven, and to say that my brother was devastated would definitely be an understatement.
