Whether it’s plot discrepancies, objects disappearing between shots, historical inaccuracies or even crew members visible on screen, there are all sorts of mistakes that can be found in movies. But which ones have logged the most mistakes? Read on to find out…
5. Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)
The first film in the hugely successful Pirates of the Caribbean series follows Captain Jack Sparrow and Will Turner, who sail the seas to rescue Elizabeth Swann, who’s been kidnapped by the crew of cursed The Black Pearl. Viewers have spotted 388 mistakes in this film, including a pretty major one where a crew member wearing a cowboy hat and white short-sleeve top appears in a shot. In another scene, you can clearly see an Adidas tag belonging to the hat Captain Jack Sparrow’s wearing, and there’s even a shot where you can see the director with a loudspeaker.
4. Superman IV: The Quest For Peace (1987)
The final instalment in the original Superman series, Superman IV: Quest For Peace sees Lex Luthor create a deadly solar powered version of Superman called Nuclear Man. The film was universally panned and has been called by some the worst ever made. A total of 415 mistakes have been spotted in the film including: the weather quickly changing from bright and sunny to cloudy and grey in between shots during the Great Wall of China scene, the fact that cosmonauts need spacesuits to survive in space, yet Lacy somehow survives in space without one, and Superman clearly reacting to being kicked by Nuclear Man before he’s actually kicked.
3. The Wizard of Oz (1939)
The fantasy classic that everyone loves (or loves to hate!) is undoubtedly one of the most popular releases in cinema history, yet it’s also got many more mistakes than most films. There’s one scene where the Scarecrow says ‘I’ll show you how to get apples’ and shortly after this, you can see Dorothy’s wearing black shoes, not the famous red slippers. When Dorothy first meets the Scarecrow, her hair noticeably changes length between shots. Another key mistake is when Dorothy falls into the pig pen near the start of the film, yet when she’s pulled out of it her dress is completely clean. These are just some of the 421 mistakes that have been spotted in the film.
2. The Birds (1963)
Alfred Hitchcock’s classic horror film is widely regarded as one of his finest, despite the fact that people have spotted 546 mistakes in it. The Birds is all about a random series of attacks on the people of Bodega Bay, California, by a group of highly aggressive and violent birds. Major mistakes in the film include icing on Cathy’s cake changing colour from white in one shot to pink in a close-up shot, two larges scratches on Melanie’s face disappearing between shots and when Annie says ‘Did you drive up from San Francisco by the coast road?’ only for her lips to be mouthing something totally different.
Apocalypse Now (1979)
Some 559 mistakes have been spotted in this Vietnam War epic, which centres on Captain Benjamin L. Willard’s secret mission to assassinate a renegade colonel who’s believed to have gone insane. Though the film was universally acclaimed, it’s riddled with mistakes. Some of the film’s major goofs include a patrol boat canopy being set alight in one scene and appearing fully intact in another scene, a tape that’s clearly being played but isn’t going over the playing heads and huts on a beach exploding but then appearing completely undamaged in a following overhead shot.
