As the internet is losing its collective mind over the seemingly constant updates on the new Star Wars film, I find myself yet again bemused over what seems to be a universal love for the film series. All my life I’ve been surrounded by hardcore or casual fans of the series, languishing alone in my own hatred for it. With this in mind, I’ve decided to list a bunch of film franchises that are far better than Star Wars.
The Terminator Franchise
Lets be honest, this franchise has really taken a tumble over the past few years. That being said, the first two films have more to them than Lucas’ six film opus ever did. James Cameron’s directing work is borderline perfection while the narrative is a great blend of intense action and science fiction.
Toy Story
There’s isn’t a soul on earth who hasn’t heard of Toy Story, the playful adventures of the talking toys being the main jewel in Pixar’s already glittering crown. Not only do these films bring in a ridiculous amount of money, they’re also incredibly well made. As much of a cliche as it is, these films really are for all ages.
Back To The Future
It’s been a big month for Back To The Future, being both the 30 year anniversary of the first film and the same month and year that the cast supposedly traveled to in the second film. Even the third film, which often gets a bad rap, is still very good, although not as good as the first two. While Star Wars is a franchise that fills everyone with nostalgia, this is the film series that brings me memories of my youth, sat in front of the television, wide eyed at the prospect of self-tying shoes and hover boards.
The Dark Knight Trilogy
I have to admit before I continue here that unlike a lot of fans of this trilogy, I actually find the first film to be the weakest. Even to this day, I find it difficult to sit and watch the entire thing. That being said, The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises are fantastic films, mixing action sequences with well acted villains. I definitely don’t find myself as in awe of the films that other people are, but there’s no getting round enjoyable the second and third films are to watch.
Jackass
Okay, I have to admit that this one is definitely a guilty pleasure for me, but for whatever reason I still find the three films in the Jackass franchise incredibly funny to watch, especially surrounded by friends on a quiet night in with a few drinks. There’s something about them that brings me back to being fifteen, giggling at the ridiculous lives of these wannabee stuntmen.
Do you think I’ve missed a notable franchise out? Or maybe you think I’m definitely wrong about Star Wars? If so, sound off in the comments, let me know why you think it deserves the high level of popularity it has.
