People often joke and call themselves carnivores as they love all meaty foods whether it be on a BBQ, on a pizza or in a roast dinner! We all know that person who loves to try new meats and can list of a reel of crazy animals they have tried and tasted and love to show off about it and enjoy the experience. However here we have a guy whose curiosity toward meat led him into an entirely new field and yielded pain in return for a small taste of something most people would cringe at… here is the guy that cut a chunk out of his own leg in order to taste what human meat tasted like!
Journalist Greg Foot trialled his own piece of calf muscle to tuck into. He had his own piece of calve muscle cut and processed in a lab in order to be prepped to cook himself. The analysis from the lab came back that the meat contains similar fibres to those found in chicken breast and similar to some different cuts of beef.
Eating human flesh is actually illegal, even if it is your own meat, but this was a conducted, safe BBC experiment. It is thought that smell is huge component to taste and the smell of the human meat cooking was described as similar to a beef and ale stew! Greg Foot said, ‘That actually smells quite nice. It’s really meaty… a lot richer than pork or chicken. It’s good, it’s like really beefy, a bit lamby,’. From the lab, they managed to lace the flesh in between pork and lamb, so therefore, Greg Foot actually produced a burger made from pork and lamb combined to imitate the taste of what human meat would replicate.
Whilst the concept of eating human meat would disgust many, it was not always illegal with it being enjoyed by different cultures. Human meat was also used in medieval medicine and given to the likes of Queen Mary and King Charles! However, in this day and age we do not have to worry about getting made into a burger any time soon.
