Die Hard Prequel – Has The Franchise Finally Jumped The Shark?

The internet had an understandable reaction to the news that a Die Hard prequel is in the works. Social media went insane, declaring their absolute hatred for the idea, Twitter exploding with a constant barrage of sarcasm at the idea. It wasn’t long before Bruce Willis was asked about his possible involvement, and if it the movie was definitely on the cards.

“It’s a very good idea, a really tricky idea, and I’m very happy about it. It’s a really cool idea, because it’s the origin story. It’s gonna happen at the beginning of this. We’re going to bounce back and forth.” It seems that the film will have a non-linear story that sees Willis returning as one of his most famous characters in the present while the action bounces back to him as a beat cop in the past.

Whether or not this fluid nature will tie into the plot is yet to be seen. Alongside his admittance of the film’s existence, Willis was also asked who he thought would play a younger version of himself. “Wow, we’ll see. I don’t know. We’re not there yet. Hopefully he’s got a hard head.” With both answers, the actor seems as if he has no excitement for the possible project, something that mirrors his enthusiasm for the last Die Hard project.

To say that this is a worrying sign for the future of the franchise is an understatement. Can any of us be that surprised though? This is a character that McClane has being playing for many decades and the franchise is seems to really be dying a slow death right now. Should we really be angry at Bruse Willis for not wanting to return to this series yet again? He’s probably just bored.

Despite how good the Die Hard films have been, or not been, I’m sure that John McClane will return with his trademark style that forces you to root for him. Cinema may have seen the death of the hot-headed cop who just does what he has to, but there’s something about McClane that never gets old, his trademark style impossible to tire of.

What do you think about the upcoming film announcement? Do you think the franchise deserves another installment? Do you want to know about the past of John McClane or do you think that there’s not much left to discover when it comes to our favourite unlucky cop? Sound off in the comments no matter what you’re opinion and tell us if you’ll be seeing the film if it ever makes it to the theatre.
