5 Fantasy Books To Read Before George R.R Martin’s The Winds Of Winter

Winter isn’t coming any time soon, people, or at least not in the form of a novel. Any readers of the A Song Of Ice and Fire series (Game Of Thrones) has probably been following author George R.R Martin’s movements very closely for quite some time. If so, you’re probably already aware that the 6th book in the series, The Winds Of Winter, has been severely delayed. There were rumors that it was going to hit book shelves in March of this year to coincide with the season 6 premiere of the TV show. Alas, now it’s probably not going to arrive before this latest season comes to its conclusion.

So for the first time, watchers of the TV show who are too lazy to read the books (we don’t blame you, they’re ridiculously long) are going to be ahead of those invested in the novels. For any people following the series on cut down trees, there was a certain pleasure in being ahead of the series every time it made its way to the screen, but that partial privilege is unfortunately no more.

But never fear. If you’re itching for some more intense and action packed fantasy while waiting for Martin’s latest while he spends all of that wonderful HBO money, here are 5 series to sink your teeth into during the mean time.

5. The Darwarth Series, by Barbra Hambly

This series is actually complete, so you can take comfort in diving head first into this one knowing that you’re guaranteed a satisfying conclusion. Medieval student begins having dreams about a world called Darwarth, a place she will soon find. One she discovers it Gil’s task to save a kingdom from a dreadful threat, the monstrous Dark begins. Gil is a strong female protagonist who moves through this epic tale with power, intelligence and wit. Ingold is the Wizard aiding her on this incredible journey, and he’s somehow even cooler than Lord Of The Rings’ Gandalf. Yep, that’s right.
