If we all spent our spare time trying to learn a new skill instead of watching Netflix, we might all create something as incredible as artist Sena Runa’s handmade paper designs.
Looking for a new hobby to fill her spare time, Sena from Istanbul, Turkey discovered paper quilling – the coiling and shaping of narrow paper strips to create a design. It wasn’t long before she realised she had a talent for colour and composition and started to sell her pieces online. They’re now so popular that earlier this year was able to leave her job in Human Resources to make her artworks full-time.
She said of her new found career path: “I have been interested in art as long as I can remember, but unfortunately I didn’t study art and design. I have a passion to create things and am very happy I found quilling.”
Primarily decorative pieces, Sena says she enjoys forming objects that have never been quilled by anyone else. She uses strips that are two centimetres thick, much thicker than the thin strips used by most quillers, and her intricate designs are playfully combined with sketches which also adds to their unique appearance.
As well as following her passion for art, Sena says she loves bringing fruitful colors to the lives of others, and spreading joy in many places around the world with her work.
