Things aren’t always want they seem to be, especially when it comes to everyday products you use. What you thought had a clear-cut function, actually may have had a different purpose when it was first created.
Potato chips have one of the most amusing invention stories of them all. They were actually made out of spite in 1853, by American cook George Crum, who served them to a customer after he complained his fried potatoes were too thick. Crum angrily sliced them extra thin and fried them to a crisp (literally!). To his amazement, the customer loved them! Word soon spread and potato chips became an international phenomenon.
