Calbuco is a strato volcano in southern Chile, southeast of Llanquihue Lake and northwest of Chapo Lake, in the Los Lagos Region. It’s close to the cities of Puerto Varas and Puerto Montt. With an elevation of 2,015 meters above sea level, the volcano is a hugely impressive and looming presence in the area. The most recent eruption occured on April 22, 2015, followed by two other small eruptions on April 24 and April 30. This was the first activity from Calbuco’s since 1972. The photos captured below of the eruption are truly incredible and breathtaking, and really need to be seen to be believed. Take a look at these astounding photos from last year’s volcano eruption in Chile.
