We live in a society where looks are considered to be very important the perception of beauty is arguably distorted, so for young people they often feel a huge amount of pressure to loom a certain way. Here we have an example of one young lady who should represent a role model for many and should be commended for her resilience and bravery, meet Shalom.

Shalom Nchom from Maryland is just 20 years old but has gone viral for such an amazing reason. She promotes self-love and inner beauty and creates a makeover for herself which shows her resilience and personal strength to love herself with or without makeup. The reason she has bad burn scars on her face is from when she lived in Nigeria and an accident involving a hot vat of frying oil spilled onto her face, head, chest, and shoulders, burning off all her hair and leaving deep scars.
However, this incident did not stop her pursuing her dream job as a makeup artist and she also decided to share her looks on YouTube through the use of video blogs, which is how she became viral! She talks about the process of self-acceptance and how the use of makeup isn’t what makes her feel happy and beautiful but that she is enhancing what is already there, without trying to cover the scars.
She said, ‘I remember when I was in middle school, because of my scars, I used to wear make-up, and I actually didn’t use foundation,’ she says. ‘I used concealer all over my face, and it was caked on just to try to conceal my scars. Even with that much make-up, I still wasn’t happy, so make-up should not make you happy,’. She spoke about some bad memories soon after the accident, recalling ‘One of my neighbors, we used to play together, came in my house and when he saw me ran away crying,’.
After the popular hashtag #ThePowerofMakeup created by fellow vlogger Nikkie Tutorials, this inspired Shalom to do her own. This is basically showing one side of the face bare and the other side with full makeup to show the difference and #ThePowerofMakeup! And this is what brought Shalom into the spotlight!
‘Now I can come on camera without make-up and show you guys how I do my make-up, you know? And some people might have negative stuff to say like, “Oh why does she look like that?” But I really don’t care because as of right now I love myself for who I am. I am accepting of what had happened to me, and I am just going to live with that. Make-up is not the reason why I am happy. I am happy because I love myself,’ she says.
This girl just goes to show she is a true inspiration to those that might feel insecure or not loving themselves, as we all have beauty both inside and externally but it is all about accepting themselves for the way we are.
