Toy Story 3 wrapped up perfectly. It felt like the ideal way to round-off the trilogy and say goodbye to Andy’s toys for good. For many of us, the film felt like the conclusion of a trilogy, so it came as something of a surprise when it was announced that there’s going to be a fourth instalment in the hugely successful series. So what do we know about Toy Story 4 so far?
Release date
The film does have a release date: it’s set to come out on June 20 in 2019. Most countries will see the film released either on that date or shortly after. The film’s release date has actually been pushed back twice: it was originally intended to be released in June 2017, then in June 2018 before its current, final release date was confirmed.
Plot
The film is set to focus on Woody and Buzz finding Bo Beep. She was Woody’s love interest in the first two films, but before the events of the third film, she’d been given away and subsequently didn’t make an appearance. Most of the other main toys from the first three films are set to appear; it’s unsure whether Mr Potato Head will, however, as his voice actor passed away before recording any lines for the film.
The future of the franchise
The Toy Story franchise is the 24th highest grossing movie franchise and the fifth highest grossing animated one. The first three have all been critically acclaimed and were all big hits at the box office, especially the third, which grossed over $1 billion worldwide. There’s no doubt that Toy Story 4 will be a big release, but whether it becomes as critically and commercially successful as the previous three instalments remains to be seen. If it is a big hit, there may even be more Toy Story films after that.
