5 Fantasy Books To Read Before George R.R Martin’s The Winds Of Winter

Winter isn’t coming any time soon, people, or at least not in the form of a novel. Any readers of the A Song Of Ice and Fire series (Game Of Thrones) has probably been following author George R.R Martin’s movements very closely for quite some time. If so, you’re probably already aware that the 6th book in the series, The Winds Of Winter, has been severely delayed. There were rumors that it was going to hit book shelves in March of this year to coincide with the season 6 premiere of the TV show. Alas, now it’s probably not going to arrive before this latest season comes to its conclusion.

So for the first time, watchers of the TV show who are too lazy to read the books (we don’t blame you, they’re ridiculously long) are going to be ahead of those invested in the novels. For any people following the series on cut down trees, there was a certain pleasure in being ahead of the series every time it made its way to the screen, but that partial privilege is unfortunately no more.

But never fear. If you’re itching for some more intense and action packed fantasy while waiting for Martin’s latest while he spends all of that wonderful HBO money, here are 5 series to sink your teeth into during the mean time.

3. The Dagger And The Coin Series, by Daniel Abraham

So far, there are four books in this ridiculously compelling and rich series, with the fifth book, The Spider’s War arriving March 8. If you had originally planned to hide yourself away from friends and family in March to make your way through Martin’s mammoth The Winds Of Winter, you can gorge on this series now and maybe finish in time for the next book’s release. It’ll be the equivalent of binging on a TV on Netflix, and them adding a new series just as you thought you were finished. Beautiful. The book centers around Cithrin,  an orphan attempting to smuggle a lost city’s gold across a truly chaotic and explosive war zone.
