The Oscar nominations have finally been unveiled, and as usual there are a few upsets that we need to talk about. Great movies have been left in the dust, while talented filmmakers, actors, actresses and beyond have been hung out to dry for lesser cinematic efforts. This particular snub is interesting for a couple of different reasons. Firstly, you can’t help but feel sorry for Netflix after all the work they put in just to make sure that their streamed original movie was eligible for Oscar nominations. Secondly, Elba’s omission from the best actor category for his role i Beasts Of No Nation strongly highlighted the clear lack of ethnic diversity that has faces so much rightful criticism and strong comment in the past week. Elba’s performance is incredibly powerful as a towering and terrifying militia leader commanding a group of painfully young soldiers, and It’s a shame that the academy didn’t recognise it this year.
