Ed Sheeran and Adele were reportedly having dinner together (super cute) when Ed Sheeran, the apparent techno-phobe announced he was going back to the old school flip phones, which lead Adele to think he was making fun of her music video.
Adele, in her famous Hello video, which has an impressive 910 million upward views, however our boy Ed hasn’t had a chance to take a look. The phone features a retro flip phone, which caused a social media storm of gifs, memes and tweets mocking the ‘outdated’ form of technology. The video was directed by Xavier Dolan who explained his reasoning for the phone decision to the LA Times “It drives me crazy. I could see the GIFs on Twitter. I’m like, ‘Guys, get over it. It doesn’t matter.’ But the real explanation is that I never like filming modern phones or cars. They’re so implanted in our lives that when you see them in movies you’re reminded you’re in reality.”
He also added “If you see an iPhone or a Toyota in a movie, they’re anti-narrative, they take you out of the story. If I put an iPhone or a modern car in a movie it feels like I’m making a commercial.” Makes sense. But it didn’t stop thousands mocking the scene.
Ed was unaware of the mockery and when telling Adele he had bought a Motorola flip phone, according to The Sun newspaper, he said: “I’m getting rid of my phone and all my numbers. I bought a Motorola flip phone. She wasn’t happy about that.” Oops. He continued “We went out for dinner and I hadn’t seen the Hello video. I said, ‘I’m getting a flip phone’ and she said, ‘is that some sort of f*****g joke?’
“I was like sat there being like, ‘is it?’ Someone piped up and was like, ‘he hasn’t seen the video’.”
Ed Sheeran has decided to take a frugal approach to technology, as he takes a break from social media posting on Twitter “I’m taking a break from my phone, emails and all social media for a while. I’ve had such an amazing ride over the last five years but I find myself seeing the world through a screen and not my eyes so I’m taking this opportunity of me not having to be anywhere or do anything to travel the world and see everything I missed.
